Social Media Activism

ZebraCrossing.world | Social Media Success Story: Free Frik & Peter Campaign

In May 2024, ZebraCrossing.world was approached with a powerful mission — to raise global awareness for two South African engineers, Frik Potgieter and Peter Huxham, who were wrongfully imprisoned in Equatorial Guinea due to political injustice. We accepted the challenge and launched a high-impact social media campaign that would ultimately change lives.

From the start, our team drove this initiative across multiple social media platforms, combining powerful storytelling with strategic digital activism. We created and launched a petition on Change.org, we also developed a dedicated campaign website — www.freefrikandpeter.co.za — to centralize all campaign updates, petition access, press coverage, and contact points.  Within one year, the campaign gained momentum, international attention, and ultimately led to the release of Frik and Peter. On 21 June 2025, they landed safely in South Africa and were reunited with their families.

  • Empathy-Driven Messaging: Authentic and heartfelt social media posts resonated with users and drove widespread sharing.
  • Petition Amplification via Social Media Ads: Strategic sponsored posts boosted visibility of the Change.org petition.
  • Collaborations with Influencers & Activists: We partnered with key voices in human rights to extend the campaign’s reach.
  • Real-Time Analytics and Optimization: Engagement data was used to fine-tune our posting times and messaging for optimal performance.
  • Geo-Targeted Social Media Advertising: Reached South Africans and global human rights audiences effectively.

A Campaign That Brought Them Home

The tireless year-long effort of our social media campaign helped sustain public pressure, keep media coverage alive, and provide visibility to diplomatic and legal work happening behind the scenes. On 21 June 2025, after over a year of unjust imprisonment, Frik and Peter returned home to their families — a deeply emotional and triumphant moment.

The Power of Social Media for Justice
